Around half of Britons have not made a will. In a nutshell this means they have no say in who their assets are passed on to when they die.
There are no two ways about it: not having a will is a bad idea. Reasons why people hesitate include not wishing to confront their mortality; putting off until tomorrow what can be done today; ignorance of the consequences of dying intestate; and, of course, the cost of what people hope, for the immediate time being at least, is an unnecessary purchase.
Now the more cheerful news. In April you can make a will in return for a donation to a local charity.
Wirral Hospice St John’s has formed partnerships with a number of local solicitors who are all willing to draw up wills at their own expense during the month long fundraising campaign. All those who take advantage of this offer have to do is make a fair donation to the Hospice in return.
The suggested minimum donation for a basic single will is £80. It’s £150 for a double will. Roughly speaking, a single will normally costs at least £150, and a double £250.
If you use one of the firms of solicitors supporting the hospice’s Make a Will Month there is absolutely no obligation at all to leave a gift in your will to the Hospice in addition to making a donation towards the cost of the will-writing service. If you choose to do so though, it is at your discretion and the solicitor is not allowed to inform the Hospice or any other charity you might wish to support after your lifetime.
