Merseyside Police detectives are appealing for witnesses after a man was found seriously injured in Heswall and subsequently died this morning. (Note: Merseyside Police later in the day issued a clarification stating that a post mortem had revealed there were no serious injuries and that, while cause of  the death remained uncertain, the deceased had not been the victim of an assault.)

At around 7.40am, the ambulance service reported that a man in his 30s had been found on Rocky Lane. He was taken to hospital by ambulance and pronounced deceased at 8.49am. At this stage, his death is being treated as unexplained and the circumstances are not known at present.

CCTV, forensic and house-to-house enquiries are being carried out in the area this morning. Road closures are in place on Rocky Lane, Beacon Lane and Rocky Lane South.

Residents are asked to be patient while detectives carry out their enquiries and motorists are asked to avoid the area where possible.
