[dropcap type=”circle”]Y[/dropcap]esterday evening’s collapse of a trackside wall means that no trains will travel in or out of Liverpool’s Lime Street station for several days.
The collapse spilled tons of rubble onto the lines and also caused damage to overhead power lines.
Last night Lime Street bound trains made it as far as Runcorn where bus services has been laid on to allow passengers to continue their onward journeys to Liverpool.
It seems the damage to the stone wall was caused when it was “loaded with concrete and cabins by a third party”. All four lines into the station were rendered impassable, according to Network Rail.
Inevitably commuters and travellers are being urged to seek alternative routes.
All services from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester, Warrington and Wigan are suspended, although some replacement buses are in operation.
“An extensive clear up needs to take place to make the location safe before repairs to the overhead wires can be undertaken,” said a spokesman for Network Rail. “Early indications suggest train services will not resume for several days.”
Engineers are making a detailed assessment of the damage, but have indicated the line might not reopen until Monday.
