[dropcap type=”circle”]H[/dropcap]eswall Golf Club is to spend over £200,000 on further course development work, which will begin at the end of this month.
Six more greens will be completely replaced to USGA standard. The contractor undertaking the work is Marcus Terry at 1st Golf Construction Ltd, which has over 28 years’ experience in the golf course construction industry, including work at 6 Open Championship venues – Royal Portrush, Royal St Georges, Royal Lytham St Annes, Muirfield, Carnoustie, and Troon.
There will also be work done on the continuing improvement of the drainage on three fairways, which will complete a three year programme. The contractor for this work will be Duncan Ross Ltd, established in 1960 and a renowned Sportsturf specialist.
During the winter months there will be some disruption to play as this work is carried out, with 6 temporary greens in operation. Visitor green fees of £20 per round will be in place to compensate for the inconvenience.
Heswall is a good test with some fabulous views and one of the nicest finishing holes in Wirral golf overlooked by the clubhouse.
The club was founded in 1902 and the course has been altered and extended on many occasions. Its length has increased from 5115 yards in 1909 to 6556 yards today, and, over the years, several renowned architects have given the club the benefit of their expertise, including Jack Morris, nephew of Old Tom, who designed the original layout, and later the legendary ‘Stylist’, Harry Vardon.
On completion of the project, in May 2017, Heswall Golf Club will continue to offer superb and improved facilities for club members and golfing visitors to the Wirral.
