[dropcap type=”circle”]L[/dropcap]inghams in Heswall will welcome Formula 1 legend, Damon Hill, to Thornton Hall Hotel for the first of a nine date book tour starting in September.
2016 marks the twentieth anniversary of Damon’s coronation as Formula One World Champion and to mark it he has written a revealing autobiography. Watching the Wheels tells the story of his journey through the last golden era of the sport when he took on the greats including the likes Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. Finally he emerged victorious as World Champion two decades ago, thus stepping out of the shadow cast by his legendary father, Graham, despite his tragic death in an aircraft accident in 1975 when Damon was just 15.
Formula One drivers have always been aware of their mortality, and the rush that comes with the danger of racing was as intoxicating for Damon Hill as it had been for his father’s generation. Then he came face-to-face with catastrophe when his team-mate, the charismatic Ayrton Senna, whom Damon describes as “the greatest driver of all time”, was killed in 1994. The swirling emotions with which Damon had to deal following the death of Senna added up to a defining moment for his generation of drivers and, for the first time ever, he talks candidly about the impact that Senna had on his life, even as he watched his own son step into motor racing.
This evening with Damon Hill takes place on September 5. Doors open at 7 for a 7.30 start. Tickets cost £20 and include a signed copy of Watching the Wheels: My Autobiography.
