[dropcap type=”circle”]H[/dropcap]eswall’s Dawstone Park has been unveiled as one of Wirral’s new Green Flag Parks.

Today a total of 23 Wirral parks and green spaces now hold the Green Flag, up from 20 in 2015, and this puts Wirral top of the Green Flag table in the North West.

Wirral South Constituency Committee identified Dawstone Park as part of its priority to improve local green spaces in 2015. The Committee then worked in partnership with local residents to set up the Friends of Dawstone Park, who do fabulous work helping to maintain and improve it.

Paul Leidecker, Chairman of the Friends of Dawstone Park said: ‘This is a fantastic achievement for us all. The support from the Constituency Committee has been very helpful right from the start. We’ve had a lot of compliments about how the park is looking these days and more than 60 people have already signed up to volunteer and help us to maintain and encourage the community to use the space.’

Cllr Matthew Patrick, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement and Communications said: ‘What is most pleasing about today’s announcement is that Dawstone Park has been the subject of a strong partnership between the local authority and residents, with one of the key objectives being to attain the Green Flag. We’re committed to ensuring an attractive local environment for all residents, and the spread of parks and green spaces that have achieved flags, right across the borough, demonstrates this.’

Cllr Tracey Pilgrim, Chair of Wirral South Constituency Committee said: ‘Wirral South Constituency Committee is proud to have successfully supported the Friends of Dawstone Park to achieve the Green Flag Award. Our ongoing partnership is seeing real environmental benefits for our local communities.’

The Green Flag Awards recognise the country’s best run and maintained parks and green spaces.

Opened in 1931, Dawstone Park has a special place at the heart of Heswall, standing as it does between the Lower and Top villages, with far-reaching views over to the hills of North Wales.
