Mum’s not the word at Linghams

Unmumsy Mum

[dropcap type=”circle”]U[/dropcap]nmumsy mums in the Heswall area turned out in force at Linghams to welcome an author whose story reflects modern publishing.

When Sarah Turner found herself with two young children but nowhere to express the hopes and fears, trials and tribulations and, let’s be honest, expletive inducing frustrations that often go hand in hand with parenthood, she created her own blog.

As far as she was concerned, mum was definitely not the word and some things just had to be said.

Her secret is that what she writes is honest, heartfelt, real and often very funny.

Sarah had no great expectations. Back in 2013 she simply wanted to tell it like it is. To her surprise her online stories and observations connected with a large, like-minded audience and can now lay claim to around five million views, while the associated facebook page has more than 370,000 Likes.

In an age when publishers increasingly let trends emerge online before signing authors it’s no surprise that Sarah was snapped up and invited to turn her attention to a book that extends The Unmumsy Mum brand.

The prospects of success are good if reaction at Linghams is anything to go by. Sarah’s appearance there sold out within five hours of being announced and The Unmumsy Mum is riding high in the bestselling charts.

Sarah admits that her two boys, one of whom she has described as ‘feral’, may not be entirely comfortable with the fact that she has laid bare their early years for posterity both in cyberspace and print. By way of atonement her book begins with a message to their more grown-up selves, explaining why she did what she did and hoping they won’t feel too badly done by.

Heswall Today prediction: The Unsunny Sons will be a Young Adult bestseller in around fifteen years from now.
